Tom Griffiths is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Loss Adjuster with a Master’s degree in geotechnical engineering and a background in the design and project management of small diameter tunnelling, drainage and highway schemes prior to specialising in the insurance aspects of building and construction, most particularly claims arising from ground movement, in respect of which he acts as an expert witness.

Founding director of RTG, focusing on expert witness and specialist subsidence work and other building related defects. Under instruction of solicitors for both claimants and defendants, well versed with the preparation of CPR35 compliant reports, attendance at expert meetings, preparation of joint statements and giving of evidence at trial. Also desktop reviews, second opinions, special case handling and project managed subsidence services (including Party Wall and CDM procedures) for insurers, loss adjusters and private clients.
1998 - 2004 Cameron Durley Consulting Ltd / Fordham Johns Partnership Ltd
Technical Director and Management Board Member of CDC responsible for expert services and special claims handling. Formerly CDC Regional Director for East Anglia and earlier an Associate Director of FJP prior to their acquisition by the Cameron Taylor Group in 2001. During this period completed dissertation for masters degree. Responsible for investigating and handling either the engineering or insurance (or both) aspects of several hundred subsidence cases (and occasionally other losses), either for property owners or for insurers, both directly under delegated authority arrangements or via their loss adjusters. From 2002 regularly acted as an expert witness in matters involving subsidence related damage for both claimants and defendants.
1997 - 1998 RM Brown Foundation Investigation Ltd & Highwood Geotechnics Ltd
Company Director of specialist contractor RMB, a market leader in the geotechnical investigation of subsidence, and also of HG its associated soil testing and geotechnical consultancy, prior to their acquisition by the CET Group. Responsible for overseeing both fieldwork and laboratory testing and for geotechnical reporting, particularly with regard to desiccation assessments but also foundation design. During this period undertook taught component of masters degree at City University, attending one day per week plus a fulltime field course.
1990 - 1997 Ellis & Buckle Chartered Loss Adjusters
Following a two year period as branch engineer at E&B’s Chelmsford office with responsibility for several hundred subsidence claims in mostly a loss adjusting role, was in 1992 a founder member of E&B’s four-strong Subsidence Unit, which led the market change to the handling of such claims on a “Project Managed” basis. Authored both E&B’s Report Writing Guide and Site Investigation Manual for subsidence claims. In addition to developing procedures, operational manuals, training and quality control, also carried own caseload of unusually complex or sensitive claims (subsidence and other construction losses) and provided second opinions and file reviews at the request of either insurers or directors. Also had specific marketing roles and frequently gave presentations and training to insurers.
1989 - 1990 Travers Morgan Consulting Engineers
Team leader responsible for planning and reporting structural inspections of numerous and varying elements of five London Underground stations including lift shafts, station platforms and retaining walls. Much of this involved trackside working outside normal running hours. Also responsible for preparation of contract documents for concrete repairs to London Underground Viaducts R18 & R20 at Greenford. Assisted in preparation of Quality System documents (BS 5750) for the construction of a gas-fired power station in the UK.
1989 Audit & Review Department, Thurrock Borough Council
Internal management consultant responsible for preparation of contract documents for the compulsory competitive tendering of TBC’s grounds maintenance operations, including production of a measured inventory and related database and reviewing and adapting financial and management information systems.
1983 - 1989 Borough Engineer’s Department, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council
Site based for 27 months (15 as Assistant Resident Engineer and 12 as Engineer’s Representative) overseeing construction of 3.5km of drainage tunnel and pipeline within an urban environment. Tunnel diameters varied from 900 to 1200mm at depths of 3 to 15m in ground varying from firm clay to loose granular material. Construction methods included pipejack tunnelling, smooth-bore segmental tunnelling, timbered headings and deep trenches together with sheet-piled and segmental ring access shafts and associated structures in reinforced or precast concrete. Design and project engineer for distributor roads and associated trunk sewers in challenging ground conditions. Design and project engineer for a passenger interchange facility at British Rail’s Leigh-on-Sea station, featuring the installation of band-drains and formation of a lightweight PFA embankment terraced into an existing slope together with final highway and traffic works. Seconded to PA Management Consultants for 18 months to assist in the development and implementation of commercial working practices within SBC’s direct labour organisation for housing maintenance.
1979 - 1983 Borough Engineer’s Department, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council
During four 7 month periods integrated with City University’s degree in civil engineering, involved with surveys, flow monitoring, preliminary and detailed design, drawings and site investigations for various major drainage schemes, including those later overseen on site. Also involved with surveys and drawings for sea defences within the old town of Leigh-on-Sea necessitated by the upstream construction of the Thames Barrier.
